Artist Statement
"The main focus of my painting and drawing is working with both geometric and organic shapes. I creat a lot of work that is busy in order to eliminate a focal point. When I do have a focal point the background will still be busy, which creats interest and leads the veiwer's eye through out the work. This technique is also done in hopes that the veiwer takes a longer look. My imagery is derived from the imagination or by abstacting images I see. I work this way not only because it is the way I am inspired to work, but also to try to spark the viewer's imagination. My works are either untitled or have vague titles in order to allow open interpretation. I want the viewer to see whatever they want without prejudice. My process begins in my head, sometimes thinking about a piece of work for weeks or even a months. Then I will figure out the composition through sketches or just start working and figure out the composition as I go. Contrast in my paintings and drawings is derived from many aspects: textured surfaces versus smooth surfaces; warm versus cool colors or bright and vivid primary and secondary colors versus organic earth colors and geometric shapes versus organic shaps. These are repeated through out the art work, creating rhythm and sometimes even harmony. An additional concern is to create depth and ambiguous space. This is achieved through overlapping of shapes with many layers of paint and glazes and by using warm light colors for the background and cool dark colors for the foreground. This reversing spatiality of traditional warm and cool colors works well, due to the overlapping of shapes. Texture in the foreground and a smooth background also help create depth in my work. Besides life experiences and my imagination, other artist have also been a means of influence and inspiration for me: Dale Chihuly's blown glass projects and installations; Marc Chagell and Pablo Picasso's cubism; Jackson Pollock's drip paintings and, finally the surrealism of Salvador Dali."
